The handloom weaving is part of my life, my community and my culture. I belong to a humble family of weavers in Bhujodi, Kachchh, who have been engaged with this craft since generations. My father Shri Vishram Valji Vankar is one of the earliest National Award Winners in Kachchh (1974). I started my work under able guidance of my father at age of 15 years. By the time I completed my college degree in 1996, he converted me into an expert artisan.
There is a vast change in our craft tradition since I started the work. Our forefathers were weaving heavy pieces like Dhabla (woolen blankets). In order to reach newer markets, we started weaving light weight shawls, stoles, mufflers etc. with very fine counts and soft materials. I believe that we have kept our
tradition alive while adapting to the changing times and markets. We have been working as a joint family based unit from our village.
