Workshops

Textiel Factorij is inviting 5 craftsmen from India to the Netherlands. 9th generation masters will give a two-day masterclass in Amsterdam. The masterclass takes place on the 1st and 2nd of December 2018 at the LLoyd Hotel in Amsterdam. 

There are 10 places per workshop available, 50 in total. Since we are working in small groups, we are relatively flexible. 

You can choose from the following workshop:

WORKSHOP 1 – AJRAKH BLOCKPRINTING by SUFIYAN KHATRI

Day 1 – 10.00 – 16.00

You can choose to do carving or learn in more dept about natural dyeing and blockprinting. Ajrakh consists of 14 stages and is relatively complex. 

• Introduction to Ajrakh
• Demonstration of making your own dyes
• Printing, dyeing, washing, coloring, boiling, washing, printing 

Day 2 – 10.00 – 16.00

At the end of the workshop you will have a better understanding on Ajrakh blockprinting technique and it’s origin, meaning. You will be able to apply natural dyes and complex printing techniques. 

End result  

Cotton scarf (60x60cm). If time permist you can make a bigger scarf. 

WORKSHOP 2 – BANDHANI by ABDULJABBAR KHATRI

Day 1 – 10.00 – 16.00

• Introduction to bandhani
• Demonstration of various tie & dyeing techniques
• Choose a technique to experiment with 

Day 2 – 10.00 – 16.00

• Continue with your experiment or choose a new technique

End result  

Silk scarf (55 x 200cm)

WORKSHOP 3 – MATA NI PACHEDI by KIRIT CHITARA

Day 1 – 10.00 – 16.00

• Introduction to mata ni pachedi
• Demonstration of the process
• Learn to use a bamboopen to draw on textiles

Day 2 – 10.00 – 16.00

• Continue with your experiment or start a new piece 

End result

WORKSHOP 4 – WEAVING by SHAMJI VANKAR

Day 1 – 10.00 – 16.00

• Introduction to Kachchh weaving
• Demonstration of the process
• Learn to weave on the loom with embroidery designs

Day 2 – 10.00 – 16.00

• Continue with your experiment and make a belt

End result

WORKSHOP 5 – BLOCK CARVING by GHANSHYAMBHAI GAJJAR

Day 1 – 10.00 – 16.00

• Introduction to block carving
• Demonstration of the process
• Learn to use the different tools to carve patterns

Day 2 – 10.00 – 16.00

• Continue with your experiment and finish your design
