‘Signature Print’
Signature Print is an interdisciplinary co-creation bringing together the newest global digital fabrication technology (FabLabs) with the oldest local craft technique. Sujata creates an artwork within her chosen theme of automation, to affect the lifestyles of the younger generation of traditional block-carving families such as Jaimin Gajjar.
Sujata incorporates the intricacy and hardship of the crafts block carving and Kalamkari - one the automation of the other - into new blocks. From footage made in the workshops of the craftspeople, she extracted sound and movement data to create design-driven patterns, nonetheless inspired by traditional block designs. The new blocks are then created with different FabLab techniques such as CNC Milling, intended to encourage younger generations of block carvers to find a new ways in their designing and making, and still keeping in touch with their ancient family craft. In India, Sujata worked with Kirit Chitara, Ghanshyambhai Gajjar and Jaimin Gajjar
